What is MP3?

MP3 is a form of compression. It allows the storage of greater amounts of audio in smaller files. MP3 compression recognizes that the human ear cannot hear all the audio frequencies of a recording. MP3 files are CD quality compressed recordings that occupy roughly one tenth to one twelfth less file space than the equivalent CD format WAV/AIFF file. This is achieved by filtering out frequencies not detected by the human ear. When encoding a file into MP3 format, a variety of compression levels can be set. For instance, an MP3 created with 128 Kbit compression will be of a greater quality and larger file size than that of a 56 Kbit compression, thus the more the compression level decreases, the lesser the sound quality. MP3 files can be burned onto CDs or played from computer hard drives and MP3 players such as the ipod.

The advantages of MP3 CDs

MP3 CDs are a dramatic improvement over audio CDs for the spoken word and audio book listener. MP3 CDs can hold many more hours of listening on a single CD than the traditional audio CD. The increased storage capacity of MP3 CDs mean reduced storage requirements and ease of use while driving. You can take more hours of listening in the car or in your suitcase and use less storage space at the same time. But you must have an MP3 compatible device to play them on.

MP3 compatible devices

MP3 compatible devices include CD players that are labeled as MP3 compatible, most computers and most DVD players.

MP3 CDs as an Archive for your portable mp3 player or iPod

For those using portable MP3 players such as the ipod, mp3 CDs are the perfect way to archive their listening. MP3 CDs as archives allow you to make space for other files on your player without losing access to the deleted files in the future.
