Besides music, Furlong's consuming passion has been cycling and in 1994 he put music aside in order to set up a highly-rated cycle business in Toronto, "Bikes on Wheels". Bicycles and music were combined when, in 1993, he cofounded the activist choir "Song Cycles", directing them and recording their Debut CD "The Round Album" in 1999.
The Euphonium Quintet, performed by Kevin Thompson and other members of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in Kuala Lumpur marked Furlong's return to serious composition in 2000, followed by several compositions including Trombone/Piano Sonata, recorded by Brad Howland, Principal Trombone of the Victoria Symphony. Two recent CD's from Lassus Audio feature his music, "Northern Soundings (2002)" and "Bedlam in Bethlehem (2003)". Several of his works are published by Trigram Music, Lassus Publications and Kendor Music, and he contributed music to the 2005 audio book "OPEN" by Lisa Moore.
Recent musical activities include performing with the trombone quartet Trombadours and conducting the choir Just Voices (see justvoices.ca) in Ottawa, where he lives with his partner Michelle and their daughter Véla.
